Learn how Netflix, YouTube & Co works and contribute to the next generation Video Platform in the context of the ATHENA project
Real-time multimedia information and entertainment services – specifically, streaming of digital video and audio content – account for the majority of today’s traffic in the Internet, and their amount and share of traffic are still growing. A major technical milestone certainly was the advent of the HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) technique. HAS is being widely deployed in the industry today and has been standardized, e.g., as the ISO/IEC MPEG Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (MPEG-DASH) standard. The Christian Doppler laboratory ATHENA (AdapTive Streaming over HTTP and Emerging Networked MultimediA Services) is jointly proposed by the Institute of Information Technology (ITEC; https://itec.aau.at) at Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt (AAU) and Bitmovin GmbH (https://bitmovin.com) to address current and future research and deployment challenges of HAS and emerging streaming methods.
The aim of ATHENA is to research and develop novel paradigms, approaches, (prototype) tools and evaluation results for the phases - multimedia content provisioning (i.e., video coding for HAS); - content delivery (i.e., video networking), and - content consumption (i.e., video player) in the media delivery chain as well as for - end-to-end aspects (incl. Quality of Experience), with a focus on, but not being limited to, HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS). Software projects (i.e., 621.451 "Softwarepraktikum" (SWP)) are available in all of the above mentioned research topics and the exact topics can be adapted to the interests and expectations of interested students. Further information about ATHENA can be found at https://athena.itec.aau.at. Join this activity, everyone is invited – get involved in and excited about HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS). |

Key recovery attack on the lightweight block cipher KLEIN
In this project the student will implement a key recovery attack on the lightweight block cipher KLEIN. KLEIN is a lightweight block cipher proposed in 2011 for using on resource constrained devices (e.g. for IoT). The main task is to implement a practical key recovery attack on this block cipher with chosen plaintext-ciphertext pairs. The algorithm for the key recovery process will be provided. The preferred language for implementation is C++/C.

Efficient and novel hash function for anonymous cryptocurrency ZCash
In this project the student will implement a novel hash function in the ZCash cryptocurrency framework. ZCash is a cryptocurrency based on the advanced cryptographic protocol zero-knowledge proof. The student will be provided with a hash function and the ZCash API (which is openly available in GitHub). The main task will be to implement the hash function using the ZCash API. This project will show the efficiency the new hash function in ZCash compared to SHA256. The implementation will be done using C++.

Efficient Implementation of novel encryption scheme with competing performance over the ubiquitous CTR mode
In this project the student will perform SW implementation of two novel ciphers in CTR mode - ForkSkinny and Fancipher. The goal is to compare the performance of these ciphers with the existing Skinny and Deoxys ciphers in CTR mode respectively. CTR mode is one fo the most widely implemented encryption mode and this project will explore possible replacements with more efficient ciphers. The implementation will be done in C/C++.

Deep learning of masked implementations
We have a range of existing experiments using DL techniques (in particular MLPs and CNNs) for the M0/M3 devices in our lab, all based on the "AES furious" implementation. We want to move towards AES implementations with countermeasures, and are looking for a student who is familiar with DL techniques. This project will be in close collaboration with two English speaking researchers in the Cybersecurity group, and supervised by Elisabeth Oswald.

Development of a generic GUI for workflow systems
Infineon is using workflow systems to execute and control various business processes. The goal of the internship at Infineon is to develop a GUI that can represent created workflows to users in a friendly way. The communication with the workflow system is done over REST calls to a web service, which are done in Python Flask. Basic knowledge of Angular and PrimeNG is a plus.

When Cloud Computing meets Internet of Things
The topic explores novel approaches for Cloud resources provisioning for Internet of Things (IoT) application, including smart homes and personalized e-health. The goal of the thesis is to perform performance evaluation of multiple Cloud instances (in Amazon, Google and the Carinthian Computing Continuum), which should later be provisioned as Docker containers to appropriate IoT applications.
