Can AI help you learn hacking skills faster?

We are conducting a broad research study at university level to explore how Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools can support beginners in learning ethical hacking and penetration testing.

What is the study about?

You will test modern AI-powered cybersecurity tools and solve Capture The Flag (CTF) challenges — real-world inspired hacking tasks used in competitions and industry training. There is a also a control group involved without AI-tools.

We want to understand:

- Can beginners keep up with experienced competitors using AI?
- How do AI tools support learning?
- Do these tools lower barriers for people with little or no prior experience?

Who can participate?

We are looking for:

- Students (Bachelor / Master)
- With little or no experience in practical cybersecurity
- Especially encouraged:
* Students who graduated from non-technical high-schools
* Women and underrepresented groups in tech

What will you do?

- Use AI tools (or a control setup) to solve cybersecurity challenges
- Work independently over ~2 months
- Spend approx. 20–30 hours total and maintian short diary logs
- Fill out 2 short questionnaires
- Participate in a final focus group discussion (~90 minutes)

What tools will you use?

Depending on your group:

- AI-based cybersecurity tools
- OR traditional tools (control group)

No prior experience required - you will learn along the way!

- €150 compensation for full participation
